Found this mint ‘68 Olds 442 convert for sale at a dealer near me last week. The catch: It’s one of 140 or so that came with the Hurst 3-speed. Recall that 442 originally stood for 4 barrel, 4 speed and dual exhaust - shouldn’t this be a 432 then? Pedantry rules!

How about the FWD 4-cylinder 442?

No, that number has a different meaning. “432 comes from the engine configuration of S20, i.e. 4 valves, 3 carburetors, and 2 camshafts.”
As you might have guessed, it’s a Fairlady Z 432.

Well, it’s a 442!
4 cylinders
4 quarts of oil between changes
2 of them actually working

Did the dealer tell you that? Sounds like it could be bullshit and it might be a “442 tribute”.
Also if I got an old car with a 3 speed manual, I would want it to be ‘three on the tree’... mainly for the novelty of it.

You mean the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais Quad 442 W41.
Now the question is whether you want a regular Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais Quad 442 W41 or a Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais Quad 442 W41 International Series sedan/coupe.

I wouldn’t want a convertible, but upgrading from a 3-speed to a 4-speed should not be difficult.

Yes- funny you should mention it. I’ve been watching for it and I saw it sitting next to the sofa on my way out the door this morning. My wife said “oh, yeah- that showed up a while ago.” I’ll make a post giving you thanks tomorrow. I shall call it gratitude day. Has a nice ring to it.

You don’t need to make a post. It’s a fabulous recounting; I couldn’t put it down. Enjoy!!

I had the same thought.
Muncie
M20 or BW T-10. Hell, if you’re going that route might as well do a 5M with overdrive.

Nope, it’s a legit 442 just optioned with the 3 speed. The three on the tree is cool in old pickups but not the best for banging gears in a musclecar. I’d swap in a 4 (
or 5 speed)
trans for driveability anyway.

But not a convertible.
